Oxfordshire FHS’s July talk is On Death and Dying – Did they really Rest In Peace, by Joan Grundy. It’s at Exeter Hall, Kidlington, at 8pm on Monday, 28 July.
Joan says her talk “On Death and Dying” is not as gruesome as it sounds. Before the invention of the stethoscope, it was difficult to tell when a person has really died. Until the twentieth century, there was much fear of being buried alive and many tales of it actually happening. Once safely buried though, there was no guarantee of eternal rest as the “body-snatchers” were always on hand to disinter fresh specimens for the anatomists.
Non-members are welcome to come to the talk. There will be helpdesks, books & Oxfordshire CDs for sale, tea & coffee, & a warm welcome – all from 7:15pm. Do come – and the talk will be written up in our journal for those from afar. Details of the venue at www.ofhs.org.uk
