The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 22 July 2013. It will be held at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall.
The subject of the talk at 8.00pm is “Imagining who they were!”, which will be presented by Geoff Bremble.
Our speaker Geoff Bremble was born in the Wirral in 1940, and in 1981 moved from Liverpool Polytechnic to what is now Oxford Brookes University as Head of School of Engineering. He retired in 2001. Geoff started his genealogical research around 1975 and discovered that his great grandfather was one of ten children living in Ireland in the 1800’s, four of whom emigrated to Liverpool and two to America. He has been trying to understand how and why they chose not to remain in Ireland.
Geoff has been doing this by trying to imagine what happenings at the family level occurred that caused them to migrate, using BMD’s, census returns and other documented information. He has chronicled these imaginings into a series of stories which, when completed, will result in a fictionalised biography of their lives.
In the talk, Geoff will explain the historical background to the family lives and will describe how he constructs stories. He will then take the audience through a few of the stories, and will read one or two short passages in order to illustrate how the atmosphere of their lives might be captured.
All members, potential members and their guests are welcome.
